NATURE’S RENEWABLE FIBRE FACTORY

WoolConnect Ltd. sheep are Australian Merinos.
Australian Merino sheep are amazing converters of grasses and other herbages in to the luxurious, soft, white fibre we call Merino wool. This process begins from the day that they are born with many Australian Merino sheep continuing to produce a quality fleece until they are six or seven years of age.

Australian Merino sheep date back to 1797 when a flock of merino sheep were imported from Spain. Over the ensuing 210 years we have seen the Australian Merino developed through careful breeding to be ideally suited to Australia’s varied and often dry climate.
Merino production in the Boorowa region began in 1836 and this area specialises in the production of ultra-fine to medium merino sheep producing wools in the 15 to 22 micron range with a high comfort factor.

Australia is the largest producer of fine Merino wool in the world. We produce around 90% of the world’s apparel wool. The Australian Merino industry has been the source of the best, fine Merino genetics in the world, many of which have come from this Boorowa region.
Australian Merino sheep are grown in a free-range environment. They live a stress free day-to-day life being handled on average only around 4 or 5 times per year. The rest of the year they are left to wander happily around the extensive hills and valleys in which they live.
Once a year they are brought in to a shed to have their fleece of wool shorn – a job which takes around 2 minutes. Each sheep produces on average around 5 kilograms of raw merino wool.
